I had a moment earlier this year after Candice D’Meza offered a moving speech about #niawilson and #youoksis . She asked the simple question “Do we listen when Black women speak?” And at that time I knew the answer because I was crying tears of sadness and my heart and my head had nothing other than the truth that weighed down on them.
We came together and had a conversation which lead to this series “The Things We are Not Allowed to Express” to discuss how Black women are silenced and policed in life and posthumously. This showcase is an exploration of the whole self. Angry art. Art that is visceral, loud. Pain is not minimized in this space.
We are opening up submissions for a artist showcase series happening during the entire month of May 2019. Please refer to the flyer for more details.
